Plant Care Guidelines

Adaptation:
Throughout the United States.

Planting Time:
See
Earliest Dates for Spring Planting of Vegetables.

Planting Method:
Sow seeds ½ inch deep. Thin seedlings when they have 2 or 3 leaves, or set transplants 18 to 36 inches apart. Set transplants horizontally with only the top third of the plant above the soil. Remove any fruit and open flowers from transplants before planting.

Soil:
Any good garden soil that is high in organic matter. pH 5.5 to 7.5.

Fertilizer:
At planting time, use 3 to 4 pounds of 10-10-10 fertilizer per 100 square feet, or 1 pound per 25-foot row. In hot summer areas, side-dress every 3 to 4 weeks with 1 pound per 25-foot row, or 1 to 2 tablespoons per plant. In cool-summer areas, side-dressing may produce excess foliage and green fruit that doesn't ripen.

Containers: Water thoroughly every 2 to 4 weeks with a liquid or soluble plant food.

Water:
How much: Apply enough water at each irrigation to wet the soil 18 to 20 inches deep.

How often: Water when the soil 2 inches deep is barely moist.

Harvest:
Harvest tomatoes when they have a deep, rich color. Store at room temperature until use.
